What is gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection that is common in the United States. It is especially common for teenagers and individuals in their twenties. Over the years, it’s also been known as “the clap” or “the drip”. It can be spread through vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

Gonorrhea is easily cured with antibiotics, but can cause major health problems for you in the future. That’s why it’s important to test for STDs if you are sexually active – the quicker you know if you have an STD, the quicker it can be treated. Using condoms for vaginal and anal sex, as well as dental dams for oral sex, offer you the best protection against gonorrhea and other STDs.

Are there symptoms?

A lot of times, gonorrhea may not have any symptoms. Sometimes the symptoms of gonorrhea are mild, so you may not notice them or they may be confused with the symptoms of another infection. If you do notice any symptoms, it’s important that you get tested quickly.  Part of the reason gonorrhea is so common is that lots of people don’t even realize they have it.

People with vaginas who have symptoms may notice:

  • Pain or burning when urinating.
  • Unusual, yellow, or bloody discharge from the vagina.
  • Bleeding between periods.
  • If a rectal infection, there may be itching in or around your anus, discharge from your rectum, or pain when you poop.

People with penises who have symptoms may notice:

  • A yellow, white, or green discharge from the penis.
  • Pain or burning when urinating.
  • Pain and swelling in one or both testicles.
  • If a rectal infection, there may be itching in or around your anus, discharge from your rectum, or pain when you poop.
